Although I may not have had a name for it at the time, advocating on other people’s behalf came naturally to me and was something I practiced from an early age. I took great pleasure in supporting family, friends and neighbors and acting as an advocate for them when they needed help. It was a role that felt comfortable to me growing up, and I enjoyed helping those who were unable to help themselves.
This natural inclination to advocate for others led to my decision to attend law school. While there, I was surprised by how few of my fellow students intended to pursue family law after graduation. Even those who didn’t know what area of law they planned to specialize in were certain of one thing – it wasn’t going to be family law. Listening to them made me realize that my background just might make me particularly suited to act as an advocate in this area.
I was born into a “blended” family. My Mom and Dad each brought two kids from prior relationships into their marriage and then had three kids of their own. I was the middle child of the three kids born during their marriage and was just 7 years old when they decided to separate. Following their divorce, my mother became a single parent of 5 kids. Needless to say, we experienced our share of complicated family law issues and learned to navigate within a new family dynamic.
After graduating from law school, I began practicing family law at Younce, Vtipil, Baznik & Banks, P.A., and have practiced exclusively in this area of law since that time. It quickly became clear to me that my personal experiences, coupled with my legal training, gave me a unique perspective that has been critical in establishing trust and building confidence with my clients in all areas of family law.
I understand the challenges posed by complicated relationships and atypical family dynamics, and use this understanding to ensure a successful outcome for my clients. I recognize how difficult it can be to see beyond the immediate crises facing my clients and to focus on the bigger picture and ultimate outcome. A family doesn’t have to look perfect, but it should come first and my experiences enable me to emphasize this point with my clients. My desire to advocate for people during this life-changing point in their family life is why I do what I do and why I practice law.
