I am often asked the question, “If you had to do it all over again, would you roll the dice and endure the mental torture and financial strain that law school demands?” Each time I answer with a resounding “YES.” The reason I went to law school was because I absolutely love helping people solve significant legal problems that greatly impact their lives.
I recently represented “Matthew,” a 42-year-old gentleman who sustained multiple injuries after falling 40 feet from a tree while working as a landscaper. After giving up hope that the employer and the workers’ compensation insurance company would do the right thing, Matthew decided to give me a call after not knowing where else to turn.
By the time he called me, his utilities had been shut off. He along with his wife and three kids were about to be evicted from their home and he had incurred several thousands of dollars in medical expenses related to his fall. After getting involved in his case, we successfully got him the benefits he was entitled to receive under the law. This allowed Matthew to keep his home and prevented his family from being put out on the street.
One day, unannounced, Matthew along with his wife and three kids all came into my office. With his youngest daughter hanging off his leg and a tear in his eye, Matthew extended his hand to me and thanked me from his heart for helping his family stay together.
An example such as this is not only why I went to law school, but also why I decided to represent people who are injured. The legal profession today has embraced specialization to a significant extent. There are differences in workload, client contact, work environment, compensation, and overall quality of life depending upon whether a lawyer practices criminal law, real estate law, trust and estate law, businesses transactions, tax law, etc.
However, I firmly believe that practicing personal injury and workers’ compensation law allows me the greatest opportunity to make a positive impact in my clients’ lives. So, the next time I am asked if I would do it all over again, I will remember Matthew along with the many others like him. And the answer will always be “Yes.”
